The AORC Gets Down to Business at the Pines
The first weekend in September marks the arrival of the Teagle Excavations ARB Pines Enduro on the Australian Off Road Championship calendar. Held on the outskirts of Millicent on South Australia’s Limestone Coast, the fourth round of the AORC provides a change of scenery for the competitors. Gone are the red desert sands, dust and open paddocks that drivers encountered during the first three rounds and in their place are the tall pines and fast flowing tracks of the Tantanoola State Forest and the electrifying arena at Teagles Quarry.
Topping the AORC leaderboard heading in to the Teagle Excavations ARB Pines Enduro is the Peter Kittle Motorsports Jimco of David Fellows and Mark Bergamin. Sitting on 52 points, Fellows is 20 points clear of the field thanks to his wins at Hyden and Finke and a solid third place finish at the MTQ Griffith 700 in July. With a maiden championship victory firmly in their sights, the team will be 100% focused on building on their good position heading in to the home straight of the season.
Currently second in the championship, Alice Spring’s Dan Auricht is looking forward to his first run at the event since 2006 in his V8 Jimco. “The close racing at the Pines provides a good chance to pass some cars and have a bit of fun. It is unbelievably fast between the trees, which can be a bit scary at times.” Said Auricht
Behind Auricht only a handful of points split Prout, Rentsch and Owen, who all head in to the Pines with good form on the board. Prout comes off a win at the hotly contested Milbrodale Mountain Classic in NSW in his single seater V8 Jimco, while the current Australian Champ, Shannon Rentsch took second at Griffith behind the winner of the 700km endurance race, Glenn Owen. The combination of which guarantees a blistering pace at the front of the field, especially when WA hotshot Travis Robinson, Matt Coleman with event sponsor Shawn Teagle in the navigators seat and a strong local contingent of South Australian competitors is added to the mix.
Teagle’s Quarry on the edge of Millicent is the focal point for event. Kicking off on Friday night with scrutineering before Saturdays high octane “Hard’s Transport Prologue” to determine the starting order for Sundays main race. Starting at 12.30pm, the afternoon’s racing is one of the highlights of the offroad racing season as the buggies, trucks and 4WD’s are unleashed on the jumps and curves of the stadium style arena. The outright contenders then hit the track again in the “PMD Race Products Top Ten Shootout” in a final bid for pole position. On its completion the quickest 4 race cars in each class (excluding those in the top ten) roll on to the starting grid for a two lap, door to door blast around the arena in the “Coates Hire Dash for Cash”, a spectacle that is not to be missed.
On Sunday morning the pine forests come alive from 8.30am for the main event, six laps of the 80km long course track. When the lights turn green, Teagle’s Quarry is once again the place to be as Australia’s leading offroad racers slip their foot off the clutch and launch away from the start line in a two at a time drag race. As they exit the arena they’ll fly over the new cross over jump and head off on the long course in the reverse direction to previous years. Providing the drivers with a fresh new challenge as they weave their way through the fast forestry tracks and between the tall pines. At the end of each 80km lap the race cars loop back into the arena, making it a great vantage point to watch the action unfold at the Teagle Excavations ARB Pines Enduro with the family on Fathers Day.
