High Country Hut Trip – Victoria – January 2009

Its amazing how much the Australian landscape can change over time. Particularly when an area is devastated by Bushfire.
In Janurary 2009, we returned to the area which was desimated by the 2006 bushfires. Following the Rooftop ‘Bus huts around Mansfield’ we proceeded to head to Merrijig camping at Sawmill settlement before getting an early start to visit a number of the High Country Huts. The first was the Tomahawk hut, which has been completely rebuilt since the fires destroyed it in 2006. The new hut looks identical to the one it replaced, less the decades of graffiti that built up over time. From here we skipped the next few huts to call into Razorback hut which survived the inferno and was again in use with a group of Horse riders who were using the site as a base for their weekends activities. The Next stop was around Craigs hut. Craigs Hut, whilst one of my least favourite destinations, is always a popular place to visit and I thought it was important to capture it in the obligitory photo shoot for the site.

Next stop was Bindaree Hut, recently repaired by the Hut Team of the Australian Land Rover Owners (www.aulro.com), Pikes huts which both were also sparred from the descructive forces of the fires. A quick scan of Mitchells Flat found no worth place to pull up and camp so we moved on the Wrens Flat and found a great little camp to lay the swags out and spend the night. The next morning we moved through to Crows hut which somehow, managed to survives the firsts even though the area around was totally burnt out and many large trees had fallen on both sides of the hut.

Last stop was to Woodspoint for a quick beer to support the local community before heading back to Melbourne through Marysville , Healesville and Yarra Glen.
