Mudbash 2009
Well Mudbash is an annual motor sport event run by the Rover Section of Scouts Australia. Held on the Queen’s Birthday Weekend at Mafeking Rover Park Carvet , Mudbash combines CAMS supported motor sport, general activities and camping. Mafeking Rover Park becomes a tent city on Mudbash weekend, with over 1500 participants and visitors annually. Vehicles competing in Mudbash are built, repaired, raced in and owned by Rover Crews state and nationwide. Each crew fundraises annually in order to upkeep their ‘buggies’. Vehicles range from modified sedans and hatchbacks, to rear engine frame buggies. Every car is different; has its own name, number, and some would say its own personality. Night time entertainment is a big draw at Mudbash. After night time car events have finished, attendees head to the stage area and continue partying to bands and dj’s till the early hours of the morning. Mudbash is organised and managed by a committee of 25 Rovers, For 2009 there were a total of 48 Vehicle entries and an attendance of over 1900 Rovers over the course of the weekend. Some of the events on offer this year were:
Quafftumbla Challenge This is a tight track that makes its way up to the top of Mt Quafftumbla. It begins across a short flat section before turning up the hill. It includes one stop garage not far from the beginning of the track, before heading uphill.
Around The World This event involves 2 cones in an open area that drivers are to navigate around in circle and figure 8 patterns.
Motorkhana This event takes place in the main arena at night and involves completing a number of laps around the large figure 8 track.
Fillies This event is the same as Motorkhana, although run in the daytime and requires the driver to be female.
Rookies Challenge This is a medium length rally style track that travels through the middle of the park. For rookies the driver must be 21 or under.
Slingshot This is a short simple track that involves a 100m straight, a u-turn then 100m back to the finish.
Offbeat This event is composed of a number of cones that the driver will be given a map of and asked to navigate through the course marked on the map.
Rock Hard This event takes place in the main arena at night and involves driving laps around a set of cones inside the arena. There are a few cones in the arena in a straight line down he middle of the arena and one at the open end. The driver must do a lap the first cone then back around the cone at the end of the arena, then the second, and so on until they have lapped each cone.
This year it was a very cold wet and muddy weekend which meant there were a few thrills with more than one car sliding in to the walls on main arena and not holding on to the track as planned. Most teams were able to adapt to this driving style and still gave it a red hot go!
