Simple food ideas
Food can make up the bulk of the weight we carry when hiking, and it is such an important item. Having the correct balance of nutritious food and compact lightweight, easy to prepare meals can take years of experience. Here we will divulge a few tips we have found along the way and how to balance taste, cooking time and weight.
MSR Whisperlite Internationale
By far one of the best stoves for hiking. I have had this baby for 10 years and it still performs well. The Pump has broken, although it still is useable. I haven’t seen another stove as compact, reliable that boils a pot of water so fast.I have had my stove for 10 years now and it has never let me down. I picked up a Service kit for it a year ago to find nothing fit my pump. A quick check found the pump was changed and the newer pump was totally different to mine. Shortly after my pump broke and the plunger no longer locked into the housing. I tried to get it fixed but the parts are no longer available. For $49 Bogong Equipment offered me a new pump, which i was really happy about. They also had a full range of spares and at areasonable rate. With plenty of MSR’s going cheap on ebay, a lot with only the burner, a cheap stove could be purchased on ebay.I recently picked up an old MSR XGK stove on ebay, for the meer sum of $56. this excellent stove out performs the Whisperlite in Alpine areas although it does take up a little more room in the pack.I will be sure to post an update soon as to how it performs in the field.

Wilson’s Prom was the location chosen and away we went. Mat, Pete and I headed down on Friday night to camp at Tidal River. Read more
