ARB Portable Air Compressor
ARB’s recent release of class leading air compressors continues with the unveiling of the new portable air compressor. Like its on-board counterparts, the portable air compressor is designed and manufactured in Australia and features an ultra compact design and class leading high pressure airflow.
Affordable and engineered to suit any off road adventure, the compressor is perfect for the inflation of tyres and other inflatable recreational gear. The compressor comes mounted in a heavy duty case for easy carrying and storage, and is equipped with a six metre, high quality abrasion and heat resistant air hose with corrosion resistant one-handed (push-lock) quick connect couplings.
The design incorporates a hard-anodised cylinder bore and Teflon impregnated carbon fibre piston seal for reduced friction and maximum trouble free life. The components, constructed entirely of lightweight, high strength engineering grade materials, are fully sealed against moisture and dust, and the design incorporates a washable sintered bronze air filter element to further prevent dust and other contaminants from permeating the unit.
Rigorous design and testing over two and a half years has also resulted in a number of unique design features, including integral stop-valves which, together with the pressure switch and relay equipped electrical system, prevent operation of the compressor until it is connected to a tyre or other inflatable item.
This has the tri-fold benefit of saving power and energy while maintaining a lower operating temperature because the compressor is not running continually. The portable compressor also features reduced electromagnetic sound emissions to protect sensitive radio and navigation equipment when the compressor is in use.
The design incorporates a raft of safety features, including an over-pressure safety valve which allows excess air to escape should the pressure rise above a safe level. This feature also offers back-up protection for either a pressure switch failure or accidental connection to an external high pressure source. An illuminated isolating switch allows the automotive grade alligator clips to be attached to the battery terminal before turning the compressor on, protecting the user from hazardous sparking, and the heavy duty Maxi-Fuse ensures professional in-line circuit protection. The motor is also equipped with an automatic thermal cut-out switch to protect against damage caused by extreme temperatures.
The compressor was recently the winner of 4×4 Australia’s portable air compressor test, against a field of 15 competitors. Not only was the ARB compressor the fastest, but it performed the tyre inflation test in less than half the time of many of the others, offering customers unmatched performance and value.
New ARB Winch Bull Bar for Holden Rodeo
Owners of late model Rodeos can now benefit from superior vehicle protection with the release of a new ARB winch bull bar.
Featuring a revolutionary splayed upright design to complement the Rodeo’s unique looks, the winch bar also incorporates ARB’s acclaimed five fold design for enormous strength, SRS air bag compatibility, twin Hi-Lift jacking points and recessed indicators. The original recovery points are also retained, further increasing the bar’s versatility in off road situations.
Months of engineering were spent designing a bull bar that incorporates splayed uprights and wings to suit the Rodeo’s unique sloped headlights and front panels. MSR Whisperlite Internationale
By far one of the best stoves for hiking. I have had this baby for 10 years and it still performs well. The Pump has broken, although it still is useable. I haven’t seen another stove as compact, reliable that boils a pot of water so fast.I have had my stove for 10 years now and it has never let me down. I picked up a Service kit for it a year ago to find nothing fit my pump. A quick check found the pump was changed and the newer pump was totally different to mine. Shortly after my pump broke and the plunger no longer locked into the housing. I tried to get it fixed but the parts are no longer available. For $49 Bogong Equipment offered me a new pump, which i was really happy about. They also had a full range of spares and at areasonable rate. With plenty of MSR’s going cheap on ebay, a lot with only the burner, a cheap stove could be purchased on ebay.I recently picked up an old MSR XGK stove on ebay, for the meer sum of $56. this excellent stove out performs the Whisperlite in Alpine areas although it does take up a little more room in the pack.I will be sure to post an update soon as to how it performs in the field.

ARB Fluro 12 Volt Light
There are a few different fluoro lights on the market, namely the Versa-Lite being the ‘one of choice’. We borrowed a Versa light for our 2003 Cape York trip and was hooked ever since. I was in one of the ARB stores and saw one sitting there, and impulse kicked in and I departed with it in my hand less a few dollars in my wallet.

The Bushranger Max-air Air Compressor
The Max Air Compressor by Bushranger.A lot of people will classify the Air Compressor as a luxury item on the shopping list. How wrong they can be. Adjusting the tyre pressures to suit the car’s setup and the terrain you are travelling on can avoid severe tyre damage and also provide a lot of much needed traction where required. We have had the luxury of testing a few Compressors with our understanding the ARB Compressor was the benchmark. Its old design, solid and backed up with all components being available as a spare part saw this unit to be the best around. The Maxair in comparison differs majorly by its lack of Air Tank. ARB opting to include this due to its most common use to power their Air Lockers. This doesn’t mean much for the Max air ass its massive 72 litre a minute flow rate makes up for it. The kit contains the compressor, fittings, hose and a handy bag. First impressions show the compressor to be well made and finished. The fittings look of decent quality, and the finish lacks the poor and cheap feel the chinese copies possess.Once attached to the battery by the generous length of cable supplied I was impressed to see it didn’t start automatically like the ARB. A quick flick of the switch on the compressor saw it rumble into life. Now with the lack of tank there is no need to fit a pressure switch. So the compressor runs whilst the power is on.In order to give it a decent test we thought we would hook it up to 2 dead flat 285’s off our Prado and race it against our ARB compressor. Both tyres were dead flat and on the vehicle. The max air comfortable beat the ARB compressor inflating in about ½ the time. Whilst the unit was hot to touch it was happy airing up all the tyres twice. Which is quite often the casse when going bush as your mate never seems to have a compressor.Inorder to give the Max Air the edge, we purchased a T and a Female Jamec coupling. This was fitted to the Compressor with a spare Pressure switch we had. The compressor now shut off and allows us to run air tools etc when connected to our 9 litre fire extinguisher which we use as an air tool. This simple and easily obtained tank carries enough air to run the rattle gun on all wheel nuts, and will be back up to 120PSI by the time you replace the wheel. Not a bad modification for an extra $50.
All in all the Max Air takes the crown and Offroader’s nod as the Best Compressor on the market for performance Vs Reliability and affordability. A simple mod such as the one we did and a smaller 1 litre air tank and it will easily run Air Lockers. You could even hook it up via one of our Air Manifolds.
